Cross Country 8 1929-1930
Philip was born on 13 December 1912 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, to Stephen Donoghue, a jockey, and his wife Bridie. At the College Philip raced on his own two feet rather than a horse’s four: he was a strong cross-country runner.
During the war he flew as an observer in Armstrong Whitley bombers with 51 Squadron, based at RAF Dishforth in Yorkshire. On 15 August 1941 his plane came down over the Netherlands, either en route to or on the return journey from a bombing mission. Philip left a widow, Olwyn, and is buried at the Schiermonnikoog Cemetery.
