Paul was born in Bristol on 22 November 1915, the son of Percival Crinks, an electrical engineer, and his wife Ethel (née Fielding). He served with the Royal Tank Regiment in the Western Desert campaign, where tanks reigned supreme in the open desert terrain. He was killed in Egypt in the first few days of the Second Battle of El Alamein. Ultimate victory in this battle marked the death knell of the Axis presence in North Africa in the spring of 1943. After the battle Churchill famously said:
Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.
He is buried at the El Alamein War Cemetery.
