Michael Dawson was born in Brighton on 20 June 1910, the son of Frances Dawson (née Sykes) and Canon William Dawson, Head Master of Brighton College, and younger brother of Paul. After attending the College, where he became Head of House, he read English Literature at Oriel College, Oxford.

When war began Dawson was stationed in Greece with the British Council. In reality, he was working for the intelligence services, according to his brother, recruited because of his facility with languages. When the Germans invaded Greece in 1941 Dawson only just made it out, and joined the RAF as a pilot officer. Dawson died of gunshot wounds on 18 May 1942 in Egypt, and is buried at the Heliopolis War Cemetery in Cairo.
