George Cornelius Buxton was born on 4 March 1921 to George Buxton and his wife Ellen (née Sawtill) of Scaynes Hill in West Sussex. At Brighton College he had a varied sporting career as a stalwart of both the water polo team and the 1st XV, and became Head of House.
During the war Buxton served in the RAF, flying the Lockheed Hudson bomber. On 28 April 1942 he was approaching RAF Cranage in Cheshire when his aircraft spun into the ground, killing all six on board. He is buried close to the crash site, in Saint John’s Church, Byley. Buxton had been promoted to flying officer just the previous day.
