Charles Piers, the son of Mabel and the Reverend Samuel Octavius Piers, was born on 17 January 1920 and attended Brighton College for four years, winning the Daryngton language prize, before leaving in 1937 to join the Royal Navy as a midshipman, eventually earning promotion to sub-lieutenant. He was killed in March 1941.
We do not know where his death occurred, but in correspondence with Walter Hett, Head Master of the College, his mother wrote:
All we know about his death is that he left a shelter in order to help firefighters during a terrible inferno.
He is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery, Prestbury, in Cheshire.
