Lieutenant, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry
Born: 22 January 1923
Died: 3 August 1944
Age at Death: 21
Killed, 3 August 1944
Lenon was born on 22 January 1923 to Harry Tucker and his wife Marjorie (née Tuker), originally from the British West Indies. The bride and groom may have been cousins – other members of Marjorie’s family were recorded over the years with the surname Tucker, which appears to have been a variant spelling. At the College he had a part in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury.
During the war he served with the 5th Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. This unit took part in July 1944 in Operation Jupiter, a punishing battle to capture ‘Hill 112’ in Normandy, thereafter known more evocatively as Cornwall Hill in honour of yhe battalion, which suffered heavy casualties. Although the Allies did not manage to capture and hold the hill, the battle was regarded as an Allied victory because of the heavy losses inflicted on the II SS Panzer Corps during the engagement. Tucker survived this battle but within weeks was reported as missing, and later as killed. He is buried in the Saint Charles de Percy War Cemetery.
