Born in Eastbourne on 5 April 1917 to Sydney Vine and his wife Kathleen, Donald had a distinguished and busy time at the College representing it in the 1st XV, Running VIII and Fives VIII, and becoming Head of House.
In December 1940 Vine was serving as a fighter pilot with 263 Squadron at Filton near Bristol, when he was assigned to escort two aircraft recently arrived from the US. The mission should have been routine and uneventful, but he flew into the ground while in a cloud and was killed near Dartmoor in Devon.
His remains are at the Higher Cemetery in Exeter.
