Lieutenant
Born: April 6th 1908
Died: January 21st 1941
Age at Death: 32
Aernout was born in the British colony of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) on 6 April 1908 to Aernout Henri Marie Van Citters, who was probably of Flemish ancestry, and his wife Violet (née Campbell). His father was probably a tea planter, as Aernout junior was born on a tea estate.
He presumably emigrated to Australia at some point, because during the war he served with the 2/8th Australian Battalion. In January 1941 he took part in the ultimately successful attack on the Axis fortress of Tobruk in Libya. This included a closely fought engagement where his battalion broke through the Axis lines and then repelled a counter-attack by tanks and infantry behind an artillery barrage. Citters died during this time, and is buried at the Knightsbridge War Cemetery in Libya.
