Sidney was born on 26 January 1922 in Lewisham, London, to Sidney Harold Fase, an engineer, and his wife Edith (née Stanley). At the College he played rugby and a little cricket, and performed in a school concert.
He joined the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1941, and fought with its 1st Battalion in the victorious campaign to capture Tunisia from the Axis powers. His battalion then moved on to Italy, where in February 1944 Fase was wounded during the battle to capture Monte Cassino, a key stronghold in the Germans’ heavily fortified Winter Line. He died from these wounds on 4 June 1944, the day the Allies entered Rome, having circumvented the Winter Line after landing at Anzio earlier in the year. Fase is buried at the Sangro River War Cemetery in Italy.
