Samuel was born on 21 October 1912 to Dennis Ginn, scion of a wealthy family of lawyers and landowners, and his wife Dorothy (née Brooke), of Cambridge. After leaving the College he read law at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and was admitted into the family firm.
During the Second World War he served with the 190th Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery, rising to acting lieutenant-colonel, and died on active service in or around Venray in the Netherlands, the site of many battles against the Germans in the closing stages of the war, on 3 December 1944. Samuel left a widow, Phyllis. He is buried at the Venray War Cemetery.
