Sergeant Air Gunner, RAF
Born: 21 April 1911
Died: 29 May 1943

Age at Death: 32

Killed on active service, 29 May 1943

Born on 21 April 1911 to Florian Williams and his wife Alfreda (née Schneider) of Hendon, Middlesex, Montagu rowed, ran and played rugby at the College.

He served as an air gunner on bombers for the RAF during the war. He died on active service in Pembroke in May 1943. There was a nearby base at Pembroke Dock, equipped with the Short Sunderland flying boat. We cannot be certain he was stationed there, though we do know that he was not home on leave, as his family lived in Sutton, Surrey. His death notice in the newspaper referred to him touchingly as:

Montagu Norminton (Tupp’ny) Williams, RAFVR, the adored husband of Beryl (née Gaul), of 6, Coniston Gardens, Sutton, Surrey, and darling Daddie [sic] of Michael and Felicity.

He is buried in All Saints Churchyard, Banstead, Surrey.

To mark Remembrance in 2023, a Brighton College family visited All Saints Churchyard, and found Montagu’s grave.
