Martin was born on 12 June 1915 to Richard Baxter-Phillips, a schoolmaster, and his wife Katharine (née Winkworth), who lived in Cuckfield, Sussex. He had a distinguished time at the College, rising to be Head of House.

During the war he served in the Federated Malay States Volunteer Force, and was captured in the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in February 1942. He was set to work on a rubber plantation, where he fell sick and died on 19 September 1943. He is buried at the Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery in present-day Myanmar.
