Laurence Pontifex Sly was born in Reigate, Surrey, on 24 March 1915, the son of Harold Sly, a stockbroker, and his wife Mildred (née Shattock). Laurence attended the College on an exhibition, and won the Lower Fifth English prize.

He rose eventually to be Head of House, editor of the school magazine and Under Officer in the Officer Training Corps. On leaving school he worked for a trading company involved in rubber plantations in Malaya, where in September 1941 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Armoured Car Regiment. He died on active service during the fall of Singapore to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 and is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
