Flight Sergeant, RAFVR
Born: August 21st 1921
Died: October 29th 1943
Age at Death: 22
Killed on active service, October 29th 1943
John Homewood was born on 21 August 1921 to Gilbert Homewood, an art expert and assessor who resided in Hove. During the war he served with the 186 Squadron RAF, flying the Hurricane fighter bomber from RAF Ayr.
He died on active service on 29 October 1943, and is buried in the Western Road Cemetery at Haywards Heath, West Sussex. Given his burial in England, and the fact that the date of his death did not coincide with any major bombing raids, it is likely that he was killed in an accident.
To mark Remembrance in 2023, several members of the Brighton College community visited the Western Road Cemetery, and found John’s grave.
