John was born in Leicester on 24 August 1922 to Louis Barder and his wife Madge (née Alverez). The family moved to Hove, and Barder attended the College for two years from 1936.
During the war he was with the Royal Engineers. As a member of 79 Assault Squadron, he would have served very much on the front line. In February 1945 he was killed in action in the Netherlands, where fighting remained heavy in pockets right up until the end of the war in Europe. Barder is buried in the Jonkerbos British War Cemetery.
