James Rouse was born in East Preston in Sussex on 18 August 1902 to Algernon Rouse and his wife Florence (née Rochford). He worked as a surgeon, physician and anaesthetist, and in 1929 married Nancy Murray. At the outbreak of war he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps.
In 1941 he found himself in Crete when the Germans invaded. In his last letter to his wife he wrote that he thought ‘I shall come through it right’, but he was killed. Rouse is buried at Souda Bay War Cemetery in Crete.
