Ian MacKintosh was born in Rio de Janeiro on 18th June 1918 to Charles MacKintosh, a banker, and his wife Margaret. Ian came to England in 1928, aged nine, with his mother and siblings. At the age of 13 he joined Brighton College, becoming Head of House at Hampden in his final year.

MacKintosh died on active service on 24 July 1941, while serving with the RAF. Writing to the Head Master, Ian’s aunt related that her nephew was killed in an accident whilst carrying out operational night flying. She added that the cause of the accident was unknown, that the family did not know much about it, and that it all seemed ‘very hush-hush’. MacKintosh’s grave is in St John’s Chapel Churchyard, Long Lawford, Warwickshire.
