Born in Chelsea on 11 May 1921 to Edward Herbert Kenney and his wife Olive (née Bellatti), Edward Herbert junior was a House Prefect and editor of the Brightonian, the College magazine. He went on to University College London (misleadingly named so at the time, since the college had been evacuated to Aberystwyth because of the war).
He joined the Life Guards, which took part in the Normandy landings of June 1944, serving as a trooper (the cavalry equivalent of a private). Trooper Kenney died of his wounds on only the third day of the campaign (not in July, as stated in the College Roll of Honour). After his death his father wrote to Walter Hett:
Our boy had some money saved, and my wife and I would like this to be presented to the College in memory of him.
In response, Hett suggested that it should be donated to the Centenary Endowment Fund, with a scholarship named after him. Kenney is buried in the Hermanville War Cemetery.
