Edward was born in Hove on 15 December 1919, the son of Ebenezer Pannell, who ran a photography business, and his wife Kathleen (née Nutley). By April 1945 he was in command of 28 Squadron, an RAF fighter unit taking part in the Burma campaign. He died on 22 April, while the Allies, having increasingly gained the upper hand against the Japanese over the past year, were advancing on the capital, Rangoon. He was mentioned in despatches after his death, and is commemorated at the Singapore Memorial.
