Born on 21 July 1918 in Hackney, London, to William Curtis-Willson (made Sir William in 1933, after he organised an important festival in Brighton) and his wife Irene (née Robey), Clifford was a Prefect and editor of the school magazine at the College. He was also in the 2nd XV and Swimming VIII, as well as being Platoon Commander in the OTC.
During the war he served with the RAF’s 660 Squadron, and was deployed to France after the 1944 invasion of Normandy as a Royal Artillery Air Observation Post Pilot. On 11 March 1945 he was flying his unarmed Auster observation aircraft when he was shot down by a German fighter plane. Curtis-Willson crashed, and died of his wounds the following morning. He is buried at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands.
