Anthony was born on 19 January 1923 in Brentford, Middlesex, to Arthur Harris and his wife Olga (née Hopkins). After Brighton College, where he was a House Prefect, editor of the Brightonian magazine, member of the Shakespeare Society, corporal in the OTC and member of the 1st XV, Harris joined the Royal Navy. There he served in the 1830 Naval Air Squadron, part of the Fleet Air Arm.
In 1943 the squadron was despatched to the United States to train in the Vought F4U Corsair fighter aircraft lent by the US to its ally. In June 1943 Harris was still in training when he crashed near the Old Stone Church Cemetery in Tiverton, Rhode Island. His plane exploded on impact and Harris was killed. He is buried in the Island Cemetery in Newport, Rhode Island.
