Alan, the son of Ernest Toley and his wife Ethel (née Lawrence), was born on 13 December 1917 in Middlesex. At the College he was Head of House and captained the 1st XV, where he was judged as ‘a very fair’ skipper, with ‘very sound’ defence. During the war he became a lieutenant in the Royal Tank Regiment, fighting in the Middle East. He then joined Force 133 of the Special

Operations Executive, charged with diverting German forces from the defence of France by tricking them into believing there was a planned invasion of Greece. William Phillips was in the same unit. Alan was killed in an air crash in Greece, and is buried at the Phaleron War Cemetery in Athens.
