During the war he served with the Royal Sussex Regiment. By November 1944 Aldrich was fighting in Tuscany. He was killed in action on 23 December on the outskirts of a village called Picciame, and is buried in the Santerno Valley War Graves Cemetery. He was survived by his father, the long-time chairman of the College Council, who had himself narrowly escaped death in the previous war after being blown up and buried alive.
