James was born on 19 July 1913 in Hampstead, Middlesex, to Ralph Hollebone and his wife Adela (née MacAlister). James joined the military three years after leaving the College, in 1934. A month into the Second World War, in October 1939, he married Phoebe Howitt. They had a son, Neil, in 1942.

During the war James served in the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and was killed fighting the Germans in Italy. Based on his date of death and place of burial, he must have been killed during the ultimate successful attempt to break through German forces’ Gothic Line. He is buried in the Gradara War Cemetery.

Two years after James died, his wife married his brother, Derek, and they had two more children.
